This Privacy Policy describes how PlaySnakeOnline.com ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you play our game or visit our website at playsnakeonline.com (the "Service").

By using the Service you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information You Provide

  • Display Name (Nickname) — You may type any name before playing. We do not require your real name. This name is temporarily shared with other players in the same game session and is not linked to any account or persistent identity. It is stored only in your browser's local storage.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage & Analytics Data — We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect anonymised information about how visitors use the site: pages visited, session duration, device type, browser, operating system, approximate geographic location (country/region), and in-game events. This data is aggregated and not linked to personal identities.
  • IP Address — Your IP address may be processed by Google Analytics and our hosting provider (Vercel) for security and analytics purposes. Google Analytics is configured to anonymise IP addresses.
  • Cookies & Local Storage — We use cookies and browser local storage to remember your preferences (e.g. game control settings, mute preference, saved nickname). See our Cookie Policy for details.
  • Multiplayer Connection Data — Real-time game data (snake position, score) is transmitted through Ably's infrastructure. This data is transient — it is used only during active gameplay and is not stored after your session ends.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To operate and deliver the multiplayer game experience
  • To remember your in-game preferences across sessions
  • To analyse usage trends and improve the game
  • To detect and prevent abuse or cheating
  • To comply with legal obligations

4. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

PlaySnakeOnline.com is a general-audience game. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or under 16 for users in the EEA). The display name entered before playing is chosen freely by the user and is not linked to any real identity.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us at PlaySnakeOnline@velovid.net. We will promptly investigate and delete any such information.

5. Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

6. Data Retention

Analytics data is retained for 14 months in Google Analytics (the minimum retention period). Local storage data (nickname, settings) remains in your browser until you clear it. Multiplayer session data (transmitted via Ably) is not persistently stored by us.

7. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures: HTTPS encryption for all traffic, secure headers (HSTS, CSP), and reputable third-party infrastructure (Vercel, Ably). However, no system is 100% secure. We encourage you not to use your real name as a game nickname.

8. International Transfers

Our service is hosted in the United States (Vercel). Google Analytics and Ably also process data internationally. By using the Service from outside the US, you consent to the transfer of data to the US and other countries. We rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) where required by GDPR for such transfers.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the Service after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
